Astrodyne TDI

In the world of power electronics, two separate storylines were being written. The first began in 1960 with the establishment of Transistor Devices Inc., later known as TDI Power. This New Jersey-based company was founded with a clear mission: to create high-reliability, high-power supplies for demanding industries. For decades, TDI carved out a niche for itself, becoming a key supplier for the aerospace, defense, and telecommunications sectors. Thirty-four years later, in 1994, a new player entered the scene. A group of seasoned power industry professionals founded Astrodyne in Mansfield, Massachusetts. Their focus was on low-to-medium power solutions and EMI filters, catering to the medical, industrial, and semiconductor markets. While TDI was the established veteran in high-power applications, Astrodyne was the agile newcomer, quickly building a reputation for its specialized power solutions. The turning point for both companies came in November 2014. In a strategic move to create a more comprehensive power solutions provider, Astrodyne Corporation acquired TDI Power. The acquisition was a natural fit, combining Astrodyne's expertise in low-to-medium power with TDI's strength in high-power applications. This union created a company with a broader product portfolio, capable of serving a wider range of customers and applications under the new name, Astrodyne TDI. A new chapter began in November 2017 when Astrodyne TDI was acquired by the private investment firm Tinicum, L.P. This acquisition provided the resources for Astrodyne TDI to further invest in engineering and expand its market reach. The company has since continued to grow through strategic acquisitions, such as the purchase of Powertronix in 2023, further solidifying its position as a global leader in innovative power solutions.
