It was founded in March 2004 by Erik and Louise Wachtmeister as an invitation-only social network, quickly gaining the nickname "MySpace for millionaires." The platform was designed to be an exclusive online space for an international community of like-minded, affluent individuals to connect, share travel advice, and attend private events.

The subscription-based division includes the core ASMALLWORLD social network, the smart luxury travel service First Class & More, and The World's Finest Clubs, which provides VIP access to nightclubs globally.
