Asia Capital Reinsurance Group (ACR) was a reinsurance company headquartered in Singapore. It was founded in November 2006 by Tan Kwang Kherng, with significant financial backing from Malaysia's sovereign wealth fund, Khazanah Nasional Berhad, and private equity firm 3i. The company was established as one of Asia's first reinsurers with a focus on specialty lines.
ACR provided reinsurance solutions across a variety of sectors including property, marine, aviation, engineering, agriculture, and motor, serving clients throughout the pan-Asian region. The business model focused on underwriting large and complex risks, leveraging in-depth knowledge of local Asian insurance markets. The company expanded its presence with offices in Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia, alongside representative offices in other parts of Asia. A notable initiative was the 2008 launch of ACR ReTakaful Holdings Limited, a joint venture to develop the Sharia-compliant retakaful sector in Malaysia and the Middle East.
In December 2019, it was announced that ACR would be acquired by Catalina Holdings (Bermuda) Ltd., a company specializing in managing legacy insurance and reinsurance portfolios in run-off. The acquisition was completed on March 31, 2020, marking Catalina's first entry into the Asian market. Following the acquisition announcement, ACR ceased writing new business and transitioned into a run-off platform, servicing its existing policies until their expiration. This strategic move allowed Catalina to establish a platform for the growing run-off market in Asia.
