Artistdirect emerged in 1994 as a digital media entertainment company, co-founded by Marc Geiger, Keith Yokomoto, Steve Rennie, and Don Muller, with its official launch in January 1997. Geiger, a prominent music executive who also co-founded Lollapalooza, envisioned a platform that would forge a direct link between musicians and their fan bases, anticipating the internet's power to reshape music distribution and create new revenue streams. The company initially operated as an online music retailer and distributor, hosting the Ultimate Band List (UBL), a comprehensive database of artists, concerts, and record labels.
The business model was centered around providing a multi-faceted online destination for music enthusiasts. This included offering multimedia content, music news, and community forums alongside e-commerce for music and merchandise. A notable early venture was a 1997 partnership with the band Blink-182 to create Loserkids.com, a dedicated online store and community. As the company evolved, it integrated free audio and video streaming, album reviews, and movie trailers into its platform. Revenue was generated through merchandise sales, online advertising, and eventually, through various strategic business segments including a talent agency, record labels, and anti-piracy services. The company went public in March 2000, just before the dot-com bubble burst.
Artistdirect's services expanded significantly over the years. In 1999, it launched the ARTISTdirect Online Music Awards, with winners selected by fan votes. The company also ventured into the record label business with ARTISTdirect Records, securing a distribution deal with BMG in 2001, and later Geiger launched the iMUSIC label to partner with established artists. In a move to diversify, Artistdirect acquired anti-piracy firms MediaDefender in 2005 and MediaSentry in 2009, creating a separate division for copyright protection. However, the company faced financial challenges, leading to the sale of its record label interests in 2005 and a delisting from major stock exchanges in 2009 when it filed to "go dark." The business was ultimately acquired by PSI Capital, Inc. in March 2015 and has been sold multiple times since for significantly lower valuations.
