The narrative of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra isn't one of a single founding moment, but a story of persistence. While attempts to establish a professional orchestra in the state date back to the 19th century, the current iteration incorporated in 1966. The journey was championed by numerous music lovers and civic leaders. A key early figure was Stella Boyle Smith, who started a precursor group called The Musical Group in her living room in 1923. When one version of the orchestra would fold, Smith and other supporters would simply start another. A significant operational turning point came under the leadership of Glen Owens, who in 1968 secured a critical $10,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Arkansas Arts and Humanities Council, providing much-needed financial stability. This funding was a catalyst, enabling the transition from a community group to a professional orchestra. Over the decades, various conductors expanded the orchestra's repertoire and audience base with innovative programming. A major milestone was realized in September 2024 with the grand opening of the Stella Boyle Smith Music Center, an $11.75 million dedicated facility. This permanent home provides space for performances and the expansion of its educational programs, solidifying the orchestra's role as a cornerstone cultural institution in Arkansas.
