Appinions operated as an attention analytics platform, providing B2B marketers with a SaaS solution to navigate the content marketing landscape. The company was established in New York City in 2007, initially under the name Jodange, by serial entrepreneur Larry Levy and Dr. Claire Cardie.
The foundation of the company's technology was built upon more than a decade of research at Cornell University led by Dr. Cardie and Mr. Levy. This research culminated in a patented system that employed natural language processing and machine learning to analyze opinions across millions of digital sources, including social media, blogs, and traditional news outlets. The platform's core function was to identify and measure the impact of opinion leaders, enabling marketers to understand who was shaping market awareness and perception on any given topic. For its clients, which included major brands like eBay, Oracle, and PwC, Appinions provided actionable insights to enhance content marketing strategies, manage executive influence, and optimize product launches by connecting with the most relevant influencers.
Co-founder and CEO Larry Levy brought extensive entrepreneurial experience to the venture, having previously founded and led multiple technology companies. His vision was to create value from the explosion of online data by systematically measuring opinions and their resulting influence. Dr. Claire Cardie, serving as Chief Scientist, provided the deep academic and technical expertise in machine learning and language processing that powered the platform. The company secured a total of $5.6 million in funding over seven rounds from investors including Difference Capital, National Science Foundation, and Crossbar Capital. In April 2015, Appinions was acquired by ScribbleLive, a Toronto-based content marketing platform. The acquisition aimed to integrate Appinions' data science capabilities into ScribbleLive's broader suite of content marketing tools, creating a more comprehensive, end-to-end platform for marketers.
