Appboxo, also known as Boxo, is a Singapore-based technology company that enables developers to transform their applications into super apps. Founded in 2019 by CEO Kaniyet Rayev and CTO Nursultan Keneshbekov, the company was established through the Antler Singapore program. Prior to Appboxo, the founders had established a London-based travel app called Mitty. Rayev, a graduate of London's Cass Business School, and Keneshbekov, who studied at Malaysia's Limkokwing University of Creative Technology, conceived Appboxo after finding it difficult to integrate third-party services into their own app.
The company's core business revolves around providing the infrastructure for apps to integrate mini-apps—lightweight applications that run within a host app—seamlessly. This allows companies to offer a variety of third-party services like e-commerce, travel booking, and financial services without users needing to download separate applications. Appboxo operates on a business-to-business (B2B) model, primarily serving app developers and companies looking to expand their service offerings and user engagement. Its revenue is generated through a commission split with the super app and mini-app partners for each successful transaction or, in some cases, through a Software as a Service (SaaS) fee for powering integrations.
Appboxo offers two main products: the Appboxo Miniapp Platform and Shopboxo. The Miniapp Platform provides software development kits (SDKs) and application programming interfaces (APIs) that allow developers to build and launch mini-apps. Shopboxo, launched a year after the company's inception, is a tool for entrepreneurs and SMEs to create customizable mobile-first online stores, which can then be integrated as mini-apps within super apps. This strategy targets the growing demand from financial super apps to diversify into e-commerce. The company works with major super apps across Southeast Asia, India, and South Africa, including clients like GCash, Paytm, and VodaPay, with a combined user base of over 500 million.
Since its founding, Appboxo has secured significant funding. After an initial pre-seed round in January 2020, it raised $1.1 million in a seed round in December 2020. This was followed by a $7 million Series A round in February 2022, led by RTP Global and with participation from Gradient Ventures (Google's AI-focused fund), Founders Fund, 500 Global, and others. The funds are intended for further product development, expanding its merchant ecosystem, and international growth, initially focusing on the Asia-Pacific region before expanding to Europe and the US.
