Apollo Zhixing is the autonomous driving technology platform of Chinese tech giant Baidu. The project, also known as Baidu Apollo, was initiated in 2013 and officially launched as an open platform in April 2017 to provide a comprehensive software and hardware solution for partners in the automotive and autonomous driving industries. The ultimate beneficiary of the company is Robin Li, the CEO of Baidu.
The company's primary offering is the Apollo open platform, which provides open-source code and capabilities for obstacle perception, trajectory planning, vehicle control, and operating systems. This platform includes a vehicle platform, hardware platform, software platform, and cloud data services, along with testing tools. Apollo collaborates with over 100 partners, including automakers like Toyota, Ford, and BMW, as well as technology firms such as Nvidia and Intel. Its business model centers on providing these technologies to partners and operating its own autonomous ride-hailing service, Apollo Go. Apollo's product ecosystem includes the Apolong, a driverless minibus produced in collaboration with King Long, and the Apollo RT6, a purpose-built, all-electric robotaxi for its ride-hailing service. The technology leverages a suite of sensors including LiDAR, cameras, and radar, combined with sensor fusion algorithms to perceive the vehicle's surroundings in real-time. It also utilizes high-definition maps and a localization system for centimeter-level positioning accuracy. A key feature is the Apollo ADFM (Autonomous Driving Foundation Model), which supports L4 autonomous driving. The platform has progressively evolved, with versions like Apollo 3.5 enabling navigation in complex urban environments and Apollo 5.5 introducing curb-to-curb driving capabilities.
