Founded in 2001 and formerly headquartered in Campbell, California, Anchor Bay Technologies operated as a fabless semiconductor company specializing in advanced digital video processing solutions. The company designed and manufactured digital semiconductor and system-level products for the digital television and high-definition video markets. Its client base primarily consisted of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) of consumer electronics like HDTVs, DVD/Blu-ray players, and AV receivers.
Anchor Bay's business model revolved around the development and sale of its proprietary Video Reference Series (VRS™) technology, which was available to OEMs as semiconductor products and to end-users through its own DVDO iScan line of external video processors. These products were engineered to significantly enhance image quality on high-resolution displays. Key technologies included 10-bit video scaling, advanced deinterlacing to convert interlaced signals to progressive scan without artifacts, and Progressive Re-Processing (PReP™), which reverted poorly deinterlaced progressive signals back to their original interlaced format to then apply superior processing. Their product line, such as the ABT2010 integrated circuit and the DVDO iScan VP50PRO system, offered features like mosquito noise reduction, edge enhancement, and Precision AV LipSync to correct audio/video timing delays.
The company's trajectory culminated in February 2011 when Silicon Image, a leader in HD connectivity solutions, acquired select assets from Anchor Bay, including its semiconductor, intellectual property, and DVDO systems product lines. This strategic acquisition was intended to integrate Anchor Bay's video processing expertise with Silicon Image's portfolio, strengthening their position in the DTV and home theater markets. Subsequently, Silicon Image itself was acquired by Lattice Semiconductor in March 2015.
