Alpha Data, formerly known as BuzzAngle Music, operated as a music business intelligence and analytics platform. The company offered analytics services that tracked daily music consumption data, including sales, streaming, and airplay activity for albums, songs, and artists. The platform's subscription service was called Alpha Data Music+.
Founded in 2013 by Border City Media as BuzzAngle Music, the company used big data collected from various platforms where people listen to music, such as retailers, radio stations, and streaming services. In 2018, it received an investment from Penske Media Corporation (PMC). Following this, BuzzAngle rebranded to Alpha Data in April 2020. The company partnered with Rolling Stone, also owned by PMC, to provide the data for its music charts, which launched in July 2019 to compete with Billboard's charts.
In October 2020, a joint venture was announced between MRC and Penske Media Corporation, combining their data businesses, which included MRC Data (formerly Nielsen Music) and Alpha Data. However, in 2021, Penske Media acquired Billboard and subsequently discontinued the music charts in Rolling Stone. As of mid-2024, the Alpha Data/BuzzAngle website was no longer active.
