In 1978, French-Armenian designer Alain Miklitarian, known professionally as Alain Mikli, launched his own eyewear brand in Paris. He aimed to transform eyeglasses from a mere medical device into a fashion accessory, a concept that would pioneer a new direction for the industry. The brand quickly became known for its unique shapes and exclusive, provocative color combinations, attracting celebrity clientele like Elton John and Andy Warhol. A key moment in the company's journey was the collaboration with renowned French designer Philippe Starck. This partnership resulted in the innovative "Starck Eyes" collection, which featured a patented screwless hinge system modeled after the human shoulder, offering unparalleled flexibility and comfort. This technical innovation, combined with a distinct aesthetic, further solidified the brand's reputation. After years of independent growth, the company faced financial challenges. In 2009, London-based investment fund Neo Capital acquired a major stake to help restructure and expand the brand internationally. This set the stage for the next significant event: the acquisition of Alain Mikli International by the Italian eyewear giant Luxottica in a deal finalized in early 2013. The acquisition, valued at approximately 90 million euros, integrated the avant-garde brand into Luxottica's powerful portfolio, aiming to leverage its global distribution network.
