Airtel Money is the mobile financial services arm of Airtel Africa, a telecommunications company providing services in 14 African countries. The platform offers a suite of digital financial products aimed at increasing financial inclusion for individuals and businesses, particularly those with limited access to traditional banking services. The core services include mobile money transfers, bill payments, international remittances, merchant payments, and account access. Customers can store funds in a secure electronic wallet to purchase goods and services, pay for utilities and school fees, and send money to other mobile users, even across different networks.
Airtel launched its services in Rwanda on March 30, 2012, after being awarded a license by the Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Agency in September 2011. A significant milestone was the acquisition of competitor Millicom's Tigo Rwanda in December 2017, which made Airtel the second-largest mobile operator in the country. The merged entity operated as Airtel-Tigo before rebranding to Airtel Rwanda in January 2020. In May 2022, Airtel Money achieved interoperability with Mobile Money Rwanda, allowing customers of both services to transact with each other seamlessly, a key step in supporting the Rwandan government's vision of a cashless economy. The business generates revenue through transaction fees on its various services, which are facilitated by a wide network of agents, mini-shops, and dedicated branches.
Airtel Rwanda is led by Managing Director Emmanuel Hamez, who was appointed in September 2021. He previously served as the CEO of Airtel in the Democratic Republic of Congo for four years. The Airtel Money division in Rwanda is headed by Managing Director Jean Claude Gaga, who has over 12 years of experience in financial services and was a pioneer of mobile financial services in the country. Airtel Money operates under its parent company, Airtel Africa plc, which is majority-owned by the Indian telecommunications company Bharti Airtel and is listed on the London Stock Exchange.
