Airly provides a software-as-a-service (SaaS) solution for monitoring and managing air quality through a proprietary network of sensors. The company was founded in 2015 in Krakow, Poland, by Wiktor Warchałowski (CEO), Michał Misiek (Head of R&D), Aleksander Konior, and Michał Kiełtyka. The initial idea stemmed from Warchałowski's personal experience when he and a friend, while training for a marathon, realized there was no access to current, localized air quality data in their heavily polluted city. This led the students from AGH University of Science and Technology to develop a prototype outdoor air quality sensor, which gained traction after winning the Smogathon event in October 2016.
Airly's business model is centered on offering an end-to-end environmental intelligence platform. It provides hardware (sensors) and software, including a data platform, a public map, and a mobile application, enabling real-time data collection and analysis. The sensors track key pollutants such as particulate matter (PM1, PM2.5, PM10) and gases (NO2, O3, SO2, CO), along with weather conditions. This data is processed through AI-driven algorithms to deliver insights and predict air quality for the next 24 hours with up to 95% accuracy. The company serves over 600 local governments and corporate clients in more than 40 countries, including cities like Jakarta, Oslo, and Hong Kong, and companies such as Philips, Veolia, and Skanska. Revenue is generated through a subscription-based model for access to its platform and data.
The company has secured total funding of $10.8 million over six rounds. A significant Series A round in November 2022 raised $5.5 million, led by Firstminute Capital and Pi Labs, with participation from investors like the Sir Richard Branson Family Office, and the co-founders of Slack and Snowflake. This funding is aimed at global expansion and further development of its technology platform.
