Aiber, trading as Mime Technologies, provides a medical support system for the aviation and maritime industries to help cabin and vessel crews manage medical incidents in remote environments. The company was spun out of the University of Aberdeen and is now headquartered in Inverness, Scotland. Co-founded by Anne Roberts (CEO) and Dr. Alasdair Mort (COO), the company aims to reduce the stress and isolation for crews responding to medical events and improve passenger health outcomes.
The Aiber system combines a software platform with a physical kit containing medical-grade sensors for monitoring vital signs, such as a Bluetooth-enabled 12-lead ECG patch, pulse oximetry, blood pressure, and temperature monitors. This technology is designed for use by non-medical professionals, guiding them through first aid procedures and enabling the real-time streaming of casualty data to ground-based medical experts. This live data and communication feed helps clinicians make more informed decisions, potentially avoiding costly and disruptive diversions, which can cost an airline between £25,000 and £500,000 per incident. The system also automates the recording and reporting of actions taken, which assists in the handover to paramedics and can be used for crew training and debriefing.
Aiber's development included input from major airlines and participation in the ATI Boeing Accelerator program, which helped refine the solution for real-world scenarios. The company generates revenue by selling its hardware and software solution to commercial airlines, business jets, and maritime clients. In May 2022, Aiber secured a £2 million funding round, with £1.6 million from lead investor BGF, alongside contributions from existing investors Scottish Enterprise and Equity Gap, to accelerate its global rollout.
