AgraQuest, founded in 1995 by entomologist Dr. Pamela Marrone, specialized in developing and marketing biological pest management solutions for the agricultural sector. Dr. Marrone, leveraging her background in entomology and a passion for environmentally responsible pest control that began in childhood, established the company to find naturally occurring microorganisms to serve as alternatives to chemical pesticides. Her career, which included leading insect biology at Monsanto and founding Entotech, a biopesticide subsidiary of Novo Nordisk, provided her with a deep understanding of the need for nature-based agricultural solutions.

The company operated by systematically screening and evaluating microbes from diverse global environments—such as soil, plants, and even cinnamon trees—to develop them into commercial biopesticides. This proprietary process led to a portfolio of well-regarded products. Its flagship fungicide, Serenade, originated from a microorganism discovered in a California peach orchard and became a global standard in biofungicides. Other key products included the fungicides Rhapsody, Sonata, and Ballad, as well as Requiem insecticides. These offerings provided farmers with effective disease and pest control, targeting the fruit and vegetable market, broad-acre crops, and post-harvest protection. AgraQuest's business model focused on providing these "green products" as part of integrated pest management programs, which help minimize chemical resistance and environmental impact. The company sold its products through its own sales force in North America and via a network of distributors and partners in over 30 countries globally.

A significant milestone in the company's journey was its acquisition by Bayer CropScience in August 2012 for a purchase price of $425 million, plus potential milestone payments. This acquisition was a strategic move by Bayer to build a leading technology platform for green products and strengthen its position in the growing fruits and vegetables market. For AgraQuest, becoming part of Bayer provided the resources to make its products available to farmers worldwide. At the time of the acquisition, AgraQuest had approximately 250 employees and operated an R&D site in Davis, California, and a production facility in Tlaxcala, Mexico, both of which were integrated into Bayer's operations.
