The story begins not with a startup, but with a corporate giant. In 1989, General Electric established a disaster recovery division, providing backup systems for large corporations. By 2002, this division was acquired by the private equity firm Generation Partners and rebranded as Agility Recovery Solutions. The key shift happened in 2004 when a new management team, including Bob and Bill Boyd, was brought in. They saw an untapped market: small and medium-sized businesses that had been largely ignored by the disaster recovery industry. Under this new leadership, Agility pivoted to a subscription-based model. For a monthly fee, businesses gained access to everything they would need to recover from an interruption—from temporary office space and backup generators to communications and computer equipment. This strategy was highly effective, growing the company's customer base from 300 to 20,000. The next chapter was marked by private equity acquisitions and strategic growth. In 2015, LLR Partners acquired a majority stake. This was followed by a series of acquisitions to broaden their service offerings, including Preparis for emergency notifications in 2019 and Recovery Solutions in 2020 to strengthen their position in the financial sector. Most recently, in late 2023, New State Capital Partners acquired Agility, merging it with its existing business continuity platform, AFIMAC Global.
