Afterbuy, a product of ViA-Online GmbH based in Krefeld, Germany, provides a comprehensive, cloud-based, all-in-one solution for e-commerce process automation. The company's journey began in 1998 with the development and sale of the ViA-Shop, a shop system for small and medium-sized merchants. This early focus on e-commerce merchants facilitated the 2002 launch of "Afterbay," an eBay sales processing tool, which was later renamed Afterbuy and integrated with the ViA-Shop. The firm was founded by Alfons Denzler and Markus Walber.
The platform is designed to serve online retailers, from small businesses to larger enterprises, by centralizing and automating their sales processes across multiple channels. Afterbuy's business model is based on a revenue-based pricing structure, ensuring aligned goals with its clients, and also offers tiered subscription plans. This Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) application manages the entire e-commerce workflow. Key features include merchandise and inventory management, multi-channel listing on marketplaces like eBay, Amazon, and Otto, order processing, shipping and logistics management, customer relationship management (CRM), and accounting functionalities. The system supports integrations with various shipping providers such as DHL, Hermes, and DPD, and offers interfaces to accounting software.
A significant milestone in Afterbuy's history was its acquisition by eBay Inc. in October 2007, which allowed it to expand with eBay's resources while continuing to operate under its own brand. In 2016, the company was sold by eBay to Nexec Holding GmbH, a holding company of former ViA-Online CEO Valentin Schütt, who had originally developed the VIA-eBay software in 2012. More recently, in May 2021, ViA-Online GmbH became part of the ECOMMERCE ONE Group, backed by private equity investor Oakley Capital.
