Aerbio is a biotechnology company that converts carbon dioxide and hydrogen into sustainable, single-cell protein. The company was officially launched in August 2024, formed through a management buyout of the UK-based company Deep Branch Biotechnology Ltd. The founding management team includes Kaspar Kristiansen (CEO), Rob Mansfield (CTO), and Peter Rowe (CXO). Aerbio's core technology is a gas fermentation process that utilizes microbes to produce a protein-rich ingredient, Proton™, as a sustainable alternative to traditional protein sources. This process uses hydrogen and carbon dioxide as inputs instead of sugar, requires no arable land, and has a significantly smaller carbon footprint than conventional methods.
The company's primary market is animal and human nutrition. Its flagship product, Proton™, is a protein with a complete amino acid profile, designed for use in applications such as aquafeed. Aerbio operates pilot facilities at the Brightlands Chemelot Campus in the Netherlands, which were acquired from Deep Branch and are capable of producing over 200 kg of Proton™ per month. The business model is focused on scaling up production and commercializing Proton™ through partnerships with industry leaders in sectors like animal feed. The company collaborates with feedstock suppliers, engineering partners, and universities to refine its technology and product applications.
Aerbio's headquarters are in Copenhagen, Denmark, with additional operations in the Netherlands. In late 2024, the company announced plans for a Series A funding round of up to €50 million to finance the construction of a demonstration-scale facility, a key step toward full commercial operations. The company's long-term vision extends beyond protein to create a range of sustainable products using its proprietary (R)evolve™ gas fermentation platform.
