Adaptive Insurance is a Texas-based climate resiliency company founded in 2024 by CEO Mike Gulla and CTO Arik Yelovitch. It emerged from the climate-tech incubator Montauk Climate to address the increasing risks and coverage gaps in traditional insurance due to climate change. Gulla, a veteran with over 20 years in the insurance industry, co-founded the company to offer more agile solutions for the immediate financial shocks businesses face from weather-related events.
The company develops and provides parametric insurance products for U.S. businesses, particularly small to medium-sized enterprises, using an AI-driven platform that leverages real-time climate and grid data for risk assessment. Parametric insurance operates on predefined triggers; when a specified event, such as a power outage of a certain duration, is verified by data, an agreed-upon payment is automatically and quickly disbursed. This model bypasses complex claims processes, providing swift financial relief that clients can use for any business need, such as paying employees or replacing lost inventory.
Its flagship product, GridProtect, is the first insurance product for short-duration power outages, designed to offer immediate financial relief from disruptions that cost American businesses an estimated $150 billion annually. In February 2025, Adaptive secured a $5 million seed funding round led by Congruent Ventures, with participation from Montauk Climate, Generation Space, and private funders to accelerate the nationwide rollout of GridProtect and develop new products. The company has since partnered with Tokio Marine HCC to expand GridProtect's availability to 18 states. Adaptive plans to launch additional products covering risks like wind, precipitation, wildfires, and temperature fluctuations.
