Activation Energy Limited was an Irish energy services company established on November 15, 2006, by founder Patrick Liddy, an electrical engineer with a background in the energy sector. The company specialized in providing demand response services, which connect the electricity consumption flexibility of large commercial and industrial users to revenue opportunities within the wholesale electricity market and from system operators.
The firm's core business involved creating a new income stream for its clients—such as Lisheen Mines, Castlecool Cold Storage, and Xerox—by managing their flexible electricity demand. This service helped to increase the available capacity on the electrical grid, enhance overall system efficiency, and lower costs for all electricity users. Activation Energy operated within the Single Electricity Market (SEM), the capacity market for the island of Ireland. The company was a pioneer in the Irish demand-side management market and was recognized with an award at the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland's Energy Show in 2013.
On February 13, 2014, the Dublin-based company was acquired by EnerNOC, Inc. (now Enel X North America), a prominent provider of energy intelligence software. This acquisition provided EnerNOC with an immediate entry into the Irish capacity market and was seen as a strategic move to expand its European footprint. Following the acquisition, the Dublin-based team grew to become a significant service provider in both Ireland and the UK. Activation Energy Limited as a corporate entity was officially dissolved on May 26, 2021.
