In 1984, Tony Kamel identified a niche yet critical need within the airline industry: managing hotel accommodations for flight crews. Starting small at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York, he founded Accommodations Plus International (API) to provide a specialized travel management service. The company focused on a simple value proposition: handling the complex logistics of crew layovers, allowing airlines to operate more efficiently. This model proved effective, and API steadily grew, expanding its services globally. A significant turning point came in 2018 when API partnered with private equity firms ClearPoint Investment Partners and Invus Opportunities. This strategic investment was designed to fuel technological advancements and market expansion. Coinciding with this, Richard McLeer, a co-founder of Dealertrack Technologies, was appointed CEO to lead the company into its next phase of growth. Under this new leadership and with fresh capital, API enhanced its technology platform, which automates everything from hotel sourcing to invoicing. More recently, in June 2025, the company entered a new chapter when it was acquired by Haveli Investments, a technology-focused private equity firm. The acquisition aims to further accelerate API's global expansion and platform innovation, continuing its evolution from a service company to a technology-driven logistics provider for major airlines, cruise lines, and transportation companies worldwide.
