Acadine Technologies Holdings Limited was a system software company established on March 25, 2015, with its headquarters in Hong Kong and operational offices in locations including Beijing, Taipei, and Palo Alto. The company was founded by Dr. Li Gong, who also served as its Chairman and CEO. Dr. Gong's background includes a significant tenure as the president of Mozilla Corporation, where he oversaw the development of Firefox OS. This experience was directly relevant to Acadine's mission, as the startup was formed to continue the efforts related to Firefox OS after Mozilla shifted its strategy away from carrier partnerships for the mobile operating system. Several other former Mozilla staff, including former CTO Andreas Gal, also joined Acadine.
The core business of Acadine Technologies was the development of H5OS, a web-centric operating system based on the open web standard HTML5. Derived from Firefox OS, H5OS was designed as a scalable and versatile platform for a wide range of devices, including mobiles, wearables, and the Internet of Things (IoT) sector. The business model aimed to provide this operating system to partners such as original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), mobile operators, and developers, offering them the flexibility to customize the software for their specific products. The product was structured into two main components: H5OS Core, the foundational OS, and H5OS Feature Packs, which targeted specific applications and user experiences for different market segments like medical, manufacturing, smart home, and automotive.
In July 2015, Acadine announced a significant milestone with a $100 million first-round funding agreement from Tsinghua Unigroup International. However, the company faced challenges when the promised funds were not fully transferred, leading to a reorganization in April 2016. Despite releasing the first version of H5OS in February 2016 and forming partnerships with companies like ALCATEL ONETOUCH, ARM, Qualcomm, and Thundersoft, H5OS was discontinued in May 2016 and was never made publicly available. The company is now considered deadpooled.
