Abacast
Online radio and video service provider offering an integrated suite of streaming, advertising and analytics services.
Founded in 2000, Abacast operated as a provider of streaming media solutions, carving out a niche in the digital radio market. The company was headquartered in Vancouver, Washington, and focused on enabling broadcasters to monetize their online audio streams. In November 2010, Abacast secured $500,000 in convertible debt financing to expand its engineering and sales teams and accelerate product development. Concurrently, the company appointed Rob Green as CEO. Green, a veteran digital media executive with experience at Microsoft's Digital Media Division and Nine Systems (which was acquired by Akamai), was brought on to steer the company's growth and focus on revenue-generating products for its clients.
Abacast's business model centered on providing a comprehensive, integrated suite of services for the online radio industry, including streaming, advertising insertion, and analytics. Its client base primarily consisted of terrestrial and internet-only broadcasters, as well as podcasters. The company generated revenue by offering solutions that helped these clients increase their digital advertising revenue and grow their audiences. A key component of their offering was the ability to geo-target advertisements, which reportedly increased the average cost per thousand impressions (CPMs) for their customers by 50%.
The company's flagship product was the Clarity™ Digital Radio System, a cloud-based platform that provided an end-to-end solution for managing and monetizing digital audio content. Clarity's features included live and on-demand ad insertion, campaign management, and analytics. This system allowed for dynamic ad insertion into audio streams, enabling broadcasters to more effectively profit from their digital inventory. At the time of its acquisition, the Clarity system was utilized by over 1,500 online radio stations and hundreds of podcasters. Abacast's technology was designed to be a single-vendor solution for managing both linear (traditional broadcast) and non-linear (on-demand and targeted streaming) advertising. A significant milestone for the company occurred on June 9, 2014, when it was acquired by WideOrbit, a major provider of advertising management software for media companies. The acquisition was part of WideOrbit's strategy to expand its digital offerings and integrate Abacast's streaming and ad monetization technology into its product line to serve major media clients more comprehensively.
