14Trees is a construction technology company accelerating the delivery of affordable and sustainable buildings through advanced 3D printing. Founded in 2016 as a joint venture between Holcim, a global leader in building solutions, and British International Investment (BII), the UK's development finance institution, 14Trees was established to address critical infrastructure needs in Africa. More recently, the company secured a Series A-1 investment from Amazon's Climate Pledge Fund, further solidifying its growth trajectory.
The company's business model centers on providing a turnkey 3D printing construction solution, from design to execution, for both public and private sector clients. This includes the use of its proprietary, low-carbon 3D printing ink, TectorPrint, and its own 3D printer, IROKO, which was designed for multi-story construction and is the first of its kind built in Africa. This technology significantly reduces construction time—printing walls for a house in as little as 12 hours—and lowers the carbon footprint by up to 70% compared to conventional methods. Revenue is generated through construction projects, including affordable housing, schools, and commercial real estate.
14Trees has achieved several significant milestones, establishing itself as a pioneer in the field. The company built the first 3D printed house in Africa (Malawi), the world's first 3D printed school (Malawi), and Africa's largest 3D printed affordable housing project, the 52-unit Mvule Gardens in Kenya. This project was the first 3D-printed housing development to receive the IFC's EDGE Advanced sustainable design certification. Originally focused on Africa to address the continent's estimated 50-million-unit housing deficit, 14Trees is now expanding its operations globally to Europe and the United States, targeting projects like low-carbon data centers and other large-scale buildings.
