In 1992, long before the internet reshaped the business world, Andrew Cheung founded 01 Communique in Canada. The company's initial products were built for the pre-broadband era, starting with a fax program and later a unified messaging platform that combined fax, email, and voicemail. As the 90s progressed, the company shifted its focus to the emerging field of remote access software. This early pivot set the stage for its future. Recognizing the value of its innovations, 01 Communique began filing for patents on its remote access technology in 2000. That same year, the company went public, listing on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the ticker 'ONE'. This move provided capital and visibility. The company's core technology, which allowed a user to access their personal computer from a remote location via the internet, was formalized in a key U.S. patent awarded in 2005. This patent became the centerpiece of a significant event in the company's history: a lengthy legal battle. In 2006, 01 Communique sued Citrix Systems, a much larger competitor, for patent infringement, alleging that Citrix's GoToMyPC product used its patented technology. The litigation spanned over a decade, with courts ultimately ruling that while 01 Communique's patent was valid, Citrix had not infringed upon it. Despite the outcome, the case highlighted the company's foundation in unique technology. Today, 01 Communique has pivoted again, leveraging its deep experience to focus on what it sees as the next frontier: quantum-safe cybersecurity solutions.
